Top Station: Top Station, situated approximately 32 km from Munnar on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road, is the highest point in Munnar, standing at an elevation of 1,700 meters. Located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the scenic Theni valley in Tamil Nadu.
Gap Road, located 9 km from Pallivasal, connects Munnar to Madurai via NH 47, originating from Cochin. The road offers a stunning view of vast tea plantations, misty clouds resembling soft cotton, and clear blue skies with mist-covered hills as a backdrop. This picturesque setting is perfect for those seeking tranquility in Munnar’s beautiful valley. The name "Gap Road" comes from the heart-shaped gap formed between two mountains, adding to the charm of this serene location.
Anakulam : Anakulam is a quaint village nestled in the Devikulam Block of Idukki District, Kerala, under the Mankulam Panchayat in the Central Kerala Division. Surrounded by tribal villages and expansive forest ranges, Anakulam is renowned for its two rivers and hidden waterfalls in the valley. A walk along the riverside offers the soothing sound of gurgling waters and the thunderous roar echoing through the mountains. The Anakulam River, along with the Nallathani River, flows through the village, originating from the Nallathani Mountains and eventually reaching the Boothathankettu Reservoir. The village derives its name from the river, where elephants are known to come and bathe.
Kolukkumalai : It is a charming, fairy tale-like village in Bodinayakanur Taluk, located in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, near the Idukki district border in Kerala. Known for housing the highest tea plantations in the world, the tea grown here boasts a unique flavor and freshness, thanks to the high altitude. Perched at around 7,130 feet (2,170 meters) above sea level, Kolukkumalai is approximately 37 kilometers from Munnar. The hilltop village is accessible only by jeep due to the rugged terrain and rain-soaked roads that lead to this scenic destination.
Echo Point : Its name from the natural echo phenomenon experienced at this scenic lakeside spot, where your voice echoes back when you shout. Echo Point is enveloped in lush greenery, giving it a constant verdant appearance. This adventurous destination is ideal for nature walks and trekking, offering a perfect retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by mist-covered hills, waterfalls, and fresh, clean air, the place is a visual delight for visitors.
Mattupetty Dam :Nestled in the hills of Munnar, near the Anamudi peak, lies Mattupetty, a charming hill station situated at an altitude of 1,700 meters, The main attractions of Mattupetty are its dam and picturesque lake. The Mattupetty Dam, a storage concrete gravity dam, was built as part of the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project in the late 1940s and spans an area of 105 square kilometers. The serene atmosphere of the lake offers a peaceful escape, with options to either enjoy a boat ride on the water or simply relax on the shore, soaking in the tranquillity of the surroundings.
Tea Museum:The Tata Tea Museum in Munnar offers a captivating glimpse into the evolution and development of tea plantations in this region of Kerala. It preserves the rich history of tea cultivation not only in Munnar but across India and the world. The museum showcases photographs, artifacts, and machinery related to the tea industry, each representing significant milestones in the local tea trade. Located at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea, the museum stands as a tribute to the pioneers who dedicated their efforts to the growth of the tea industry. Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, except Mondays.
Chinnakanal Waterfalls, located 25 km from Pallivasal near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, is surrounded by numerous scenic attractions. Highlights include the Chinnakanal Waterfalls, the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, and the Periyakanal Waterfalls, making it a picturesque destination for visitors.
Eravikulam National Park, covering an area of 97 sq km along the crest of the Western Ghats in Idukki district, is home to the largest viable population of the Nilgiri Tahr, along with several rare species of animals, birds, and butterflies. The park’s tourism zone closes annually during the calving season in February and March. Visitors are treated to breathtaking views of tea plantations and mist-covered rolling hills. The park becomes especially popular when the slopes are blanketed in blue during the blooming of the Neelakurinji, a plant endemic to the Western Ghats that flowers once every twelve years.
